X-ray orbital modulations from low-mass X-ray binaries.
Abstract
EXOSAT observations are presented to illustrate the different types of X-ray orbital modulation seen from low-mass X-ray binaries. The thick azimuthally structured accretion disks in low-mass X-ray binaries are discussed. The spectral evolution during X-ray dips is described. The period distribution of low-mass X-ray binaries is compared with that of cataclysmic variables, showing that the two are similar although no low-mass X-ray binaries have orbital periods between 1 and 2 hrs.
